Paper Marbling

Examples of marbled paper in flowing colors

Paper marbling, one of the oldest and most satisfying art forms, can be learned in just an afternoon. It involves floating color on a viscous solution, such as carrageenan or methyl cellulose, and shaping it into patterns using sticks or combs. The resulting print is unique and one-of-a-kind, as each sheet is pressed onto paper in a single fluid motion.

The technique creates designs that resemble polished stone, flowing water, or intricate textiles, making marbled paper highly prized for centuries as a writing surface, bookbinding material, and decorative endpaper. Its enduring appeal lies in its unpredictability; while you guide the color, the medium has its own life and creates unexpected results.

In class, you’ll experiment with acrylic colors floated on size, exploring patterns and movements until you find designs that resonate with you. Each student receives five sheets of specialty paper to create their prints. We recommend using your finished artworks as covers for handmade cards or incorporating them into Iris folding, paper weaving, and collages.

A Brief History

Marbling originated in Japan around the 8th century as Suminagashi, a technique where ink was floated on plain water and lifted onto paper in gentle, organic swirls. This practice spread to India, Persia, and Turkey, where artists began experimenting with richer colors and thicker mediums, eventually developing the more structured patterns associated with traditional marbled paper. European travelers encountered the art in Istanbul during the 17th century and brought it back home, where it quickly gained popularity in fine bookbinding and stationery across the continent.

If you attend a papermaking workshop, you’ll create deckle-edged papers to complement your marbled covers.
